Accrington Stanley has announced that veteran forward Shaun Whalley has signed a new one-year contract, committing him to the club for the 2026-27 season. The 38-year-old's extension comes as the Reds prepare for their final League Two fixture against Oldham Athletic on Saturday, May 3rd, 2026. This deal ensures Whalley, a key figure, continues his impactful presence at the Wham Stadium.

Whalley's journey with Stanley spans two significant spells. He initially played for the club from 2006 to 2008 before returning in the summer of 2022. Across both tenures, he has made an impressive 220 appearances for the Reds. This season, the experienced forward has contributed five goals in 34 games, demonstrating his continued value on the pitch.

Accrington boss John Doolan expressed his delight over the signing, highlighting Whalley's multifaceted contribution. "Everyone knows what Shaun's about, everyone knows what he gives on the field, his levels of performance, but what they don't see is how he is around the dressing room, on the training field, and he's just a top, top, top player," Doolan told the club website. He likened Whalley to "a fine wine," suggesting his performance only improves with age.

Whalley himself conveyed his strong affection for the club and its supporters. "Everyone knows I love it here and I feel that the people here love me, so I want to continue playing for Accrington," he stated. He also shared his optimism for the future, looking forward to summer recruitment and aiming for a "really positive season, individually and as a team."

Before his impactful time at Accrington Stanley, Whalley began his professional career at Chester. His extensive footballing journey includes stints at Wrexham, Southport, Luton Town, and a notable seven-year spell with Shrewsbury Town, showcasing a wealth of experience he brings to the Stanley squad.
